About Lintha Village

Rakhine State, Myanmar

Lintha is a fishing village and most of the families earn a living by fishing, drying fish and selling it. Some people cut firewood in the forest to sell, or grow vegetables and fruit to sell.

Some also work in the paddy fields and are farmers. There are some nearby hotels which train and employ men and women from the village, and this has changed some families' standard of living.

In most cases both husbands and wives work, and they have to save money for the monsoon period as there is little or no work then. This lasts for four to five months starting in June. During this time life is extremely tough with very little food. In general they live from hand to mouth, are extremely poor, and in most cases the households have no electricity, running water or sanitation as they live in shacks.

Lintha is a Buddhist village which has 3 monasteries and pagodas. The villagers are very religious.
